Mother knows best, or rather Mother Nature knows best. Did you know that free range organic chickens lay eggs that have a higher Omega 3 content than mass produced eggs? That honey is a natural antibiotic and can last for thousands of years? Or that red thyme oil is a highly effective antiseptic that kills 99.9% germs naturally?
As a child, I also had my fair share of bumps and bruises. My mother would use, what I soon called “Chinese magic medicine” on my black and blues. Instantly the pain would go away and in hours the bruise would shrink. Wow, what’s in that stuff? It was all Chinese herbs that were naturally found, almost like some magic potion. It looked like ground up herbs in a brown paste soaking in White Rum, the high alcohol content preserved it and was also less drying than rubbing alcohol. My dad was from Jamaica so we used Jamaican Rum, my husband's family used rice wine. You just rub it on, and the more brown stuff on your skin, the better, let it dry and keep it there as long as you can. It didn’t hurt at all, just smelled quite fragrant, and I liked the smell, sort of like spices and earth. I remember one day in college using it on a friend from Arkansas who got her finger pinched in a door jam. She was open minded to try this ancient Chinese medicine, as she told me the bruise hurt. I smeared the Tee Dah Jou on her bruise, told her to let it dry and said it should feel better right away. As she stood there waving her hand up and down to let the alcohol dry, she looked up at me wide eyed, surprised and said, “The pain is going away already!”
God has blessed me with a husband who is a great natural cook. He is just a phenomenal intuitive chef. For that reason, I don’t cook, I don’t know how to sauté the garlic or onions just right for that ‘roasted nutty’ smell, nor do I know how to alter the recipe to account for using certain ingredients that will enhance the subtleties of flavor. A few years ago we decided to try organic foods since we could choose the ingredients of what we ate and that it should logically be healthier for you. We found a bonus, the organic foods are tastier, fresher, and felt so much better in your stomach. The most amazing thing was my husband discovered that the beef fat from organic beef would wash off his hands with just warm water without leaving a waxy residue. With the generic store bought beef, you’d need dish washing liquid to get the fat off your hands.
Here are some really cool items that I have found recently that are all natural and have some really neat benefits.
On our last ski trip to the Berkshires, we braved 5 degree weather and gusty winds. Our skin suffered from the dry air. In a shop there I discovered a hidden secret called a Bee Bar™. The Bee Bar™ is an all natural ingredient moisturizer offering soothing relief to seriously dry skin. The bar has a blend of Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Shea Butter, Beeswax, Jojoba Oil, Lanolin, Cocoa Butter, Vitamin E, Essential Oils and Fragrance. The special ingredient here is the beeswax which contains a natural antibiotic in it and when you smooth this on your hands any tiny cuts you may have will heal more quickly. The beeswax also naturally holds moisture against your skin so it won’t dry out as quickly as some other lotions and while it feels a little tacky going on, as you leave it on during the day (or better at night) the warmth of your skin melts the wax and allows it to be absorbed into your skin, leaving it feel naturally smooth and supple. I love the vanilla fragrance. The creator of this product was a woman who’s business grew from her hobby keeping bees in Washington State into a huge international business. Another cool item I found at Mrs. Greens is Clean Well (see http://cleanwelltoday.com). It is an all-natural sanitizer made from red thyme oil that kills 99.9% of all germs. It’s naturally moisturizing so it doesn’t dry your skin out and has a nice thyme fragrance. Your hands are left soft and clean, rather than dry and alcoholic smelling. It’s safe for kids and comes in both wipes and a spray. The key ingredient here is thymol. The compound thymol, derived from thyme essential oil, is one of the strongest antiseptics known and has been isolated as an ingredient in drugstore gargles, mouthwashes, cough drops, and vapor chest balms. Some of the best known products that contain thymol are Listerine mouthwash and Vicks VapoRub. Hey, the wipes are biodegradable too. Can’t beat that.
So what does this all have to do with spirituality? The uplifting moments we have that come through discovery or epiphany delight our hearts and souls. Keeping ourselves healthy and in harmony with nature and Mother Earth links our physical with the spiritual. All good things make the Universe expand as we expand with it.
